About the drive
The road to Yamunotri ends at Janki Chatti, 220 kilometres and about eight hours from Haridwar via Dehradun, Mussoorie and Barkot. From Janki Chatti the final six kilometres to the temple are covered on foot, by pony or by palki, climbing beside the young Yamuna through pine and rhododendron.
We base you at Barkot or Janki Chatti the night before rather than attempting the climb after a full day in the car, which is the single change that turns this from an exhausting Dham into a comfortable one. Ponies, palkis and porters are booked in advance at agreed rates so nobody is negotiating at the trailhead at six in the morning.
At the top, the hot spring at Surya Kund is the thing everyone remembers — water hot enough to cook rice in, metres from a glacial river, with pilgrims lowering muslin bundles in to collect as prasad. Yamunotri is the first stop on the traditional clockwise Char Dham circuit and the least crowded of the four.
