About the drive
Kanatal is 120 kilometres from Haridwar, about four hours via Dehradun, Mussoorie and Dhanaulti, on the ridge road that runs towards Tehri. It sits at around 2,590 metres among apple orchards and deodar forest, and its main attraction is what it does not have: no Mall Road, no crowds, no traffic.
This is why it has become the go-to weekend escape for people who find Mussoorie too busy. The stays are largely resorts and glamping camps with valley views, and the days are made up of forest walks, bonfires, stargazing and short drives. Surkanda Devi temple, one of the Shakti Peeths, is a two-kilometre climb from Kaddukhal nearby and gives a wide Himalayan view on a clear day.
Dhanaulti, ten kilometres back towards Mussoorie, has the Eco Park and the deodar walks, and the Tehri dam and its enormous reservoir are about an hour on, where boating and jet-skiing now run. Kanatal works either as a destination in itself or as a quieter alternative overnight stop on the way to Yamunotri.
